The students are to improve their vocabulary, incorporating new words related to different destinations and places. As it is group work, each student should learn new words from their group mates, or teach new words that they might know and the rest of the group does not.
We will need one copy per group of the intructions and one work sheet. A list of the destinations that will be presented to the students to write down, but there will be more destinations on the list than groups. The list will be cut so that there is place on each slip of paper wich will then be given out randomly to the groups. The rest of the materials do not need to be prepared: pens/pencils, scrap paper, etc.

The class will be split into groups of 4 or 5 students each and should rearrange their desks so that they can all be sitting together. They will be each given a group number/name for the last part of the activity. Each group will randomly select a destination from a bag and will keep it hidden from the rest of the class. The students will have about 15-20 minutes to brainstorm ideas about what they will need to bring on this trip.
Once this time is up, they must decide on 15-20 items that are the most important and necessary depending on where their final destination is. The teacher will give the students around 15 minutes to complete this part of the task. The list of items will then be presented to the class, each student reading out loud three of their choices and a simple explanation as to why they decided on those items. The rest of the groups should listen and write down the list on the work sheets provided. It is important that they write down the list in the proper group number.
After the presentation, the tacher will allow a few minutes for the groups to decide on the destination that the presenting group was given. This is to be based on the list of items the group talked about taking with them. Once all the groups have finished their presentations, the teacher will then make a score board in the chalk board and they will discuss the correct answers. The group who correctly guessed the most destinations is the winner.
The activity will be organized in groups of 4 or 5 students. The teacher can decide whether or not to allow the students to choose their own groups or to assign them randomly.
This activity is aimed for students in grade 6 although it could be adapted for grades 4 or 5. And it will take 30-45 minutes for brainstorming and group work, then 10-15 minutes per group for their presentation.
See work sheet on following page, the sheet would be unanswered. What is written in italic writing are examples and would be where the students are to fill in.
